Welcome to my Reflective Journal for EDUC5209G: Critical Issues in Leadership Education
My name is Kari, and I am a passionate and dedicated nurse educator with a deep commitment to fostering supportive, inclusive, and empowering environments for nurses. I believe that creating a strong, collaborative culture is essential for providing the best patient care, and I work tirelessly to ensure that both nursing staff and students feel valued, supported, and prepared for the challenges they face.
Currently, I serve as a Clinical Practice Leader in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where I have the opportunity to oversee and guide the clinical practice of nurses working in one of the most demanding and high-stakes environments in healthcare. In this role, I am responsible for supporting nurses’ clinical development, ensuring the implementation of best practices, and maintaining the highest standards of patient care. This experience gives me a unique perspective, blending the demands of critical care with the necessity for strong leadership and mentorship.
In addition to my clinical role, I am fortunate to also teach in a post-secondary nursing program, where I help shape the next generation of nurses. Through my teaching, I can share not only my clinical knowledge and skills but also my passion for developing compassionate, competent, and resilient healthcare professionals. The classroom is a space where I strive to cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep sense of professional responsibility among my students.
I hold multiple certifications that reflect my broad expertise and dedication to professional growth. These include certifications in critical care, wound care, telemetry, and adult education, each of which has enhanced my ability to support nurses in diverse and complex clinical situations. Additionally, I have specialized training in Emergency Management and Preparedness, ensuring that I am equipped to lead teams through crisis situations while maintaining a focus on patient-centred care.
A key area of personal and professional passion for me is mental health and wellness, both for patients and healthcare providers. I am dedicated to advocating for better mental health support in healthcare settings and addressing the stigma often associated with mental health issues. To support this, I am a certified instructor for The Working Mind course, developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, which focuses on promoting mental health awareness and resilience in the workplace. I also hold certifications in Heartsaver, Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) through the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, reinforcing my commitment to the ongoing education and preparedness of healthcare teams.
Throughout my career, I have remained committed to lifelong learning and to promoting the professional development of resilient healthcare professionals. I recognize that healthcare is an ever-evolving field, and as such, I am continuously seeking opportunities to grow and improve. I am deeply invested in the development of future leaders in nursing and the ongoing exploration of critical leadership issues that shape the field of nursing education today. Looking ahead, I am excited to continue contributing to the growth of nursing education, to advocate for the mental health and well-being of healthcare providers, and to lead efforts that help nurses thrive in both their personal and professional lives
